The body in the performing arts

The body in the performing arts

Workshop leader: Brigitte Hansmann
To increase the versatility of body expression in the performing arts, artists become aware of the shape of the body in relation to the Earth's gravitational field. They discover the tensions they use to maintain their personal way of being in the world, usually in a forced balance, and learn to let go of them to find a balance based on support. Then, the space around the gravitational axis is free, they feel "free of restraints" and creativity can flow unhindered. The voice is sustained in a sound box that vibrates without hindrance. They move more freely. They can find the shape of the role to play from within. They discover how to open the body so that it vibrates and moves with the music of their dance, their singing or the role to play.

We explore the emotional and mental contents held by the tension in their body, so that they are within their reach when they need them on stage, in front of the camera or in their own lives, without getting caught up in it. By recognizing sensations, and the space they occupy in the body, they can go beyond the personal meanings they learned to attribute to them as they grew up, and thus expand the register available to their art.
